The Witness
The Witness reflects the effects of domestic violence on children emphasized through interviews, analysis of drawings and current psychological support and studies. Children are often silent victims to partner violence, especially throughout the Covid 19 pandemic lockdowns as one in three women worldwide experience physical or sexual violence mostly by an intimate partner.
The grid structure allows emphasis on visual and narrative elements within the book. Whilst the typography presents a calm and reflective tone. The reader is confronted with childrens gazes, interviews and drawings about parents fighting and information on how to better support children. The purpose of this is to evoke sympathy and a closer eye into the fears experienced by children in order to encourage greater support.
As a witness myself, I am aware of the long term post traumatic stress this can have on a child. I hope this book can bring attention to children’s feelings and experiences to encourage a more loving and safe environment. I am currently working on extending this project to workbook guides for children.
